The role of photojournalists women in Spain after Franco’s dictatorship

Abstract: During the last years of Franco’s dictatorship in Spain (1939-1975), photography became an important tool to show the changes that the country was going through. This paper focuses on the role of the first Spanish women photographers, who emerged during those years. Moreover, the pictures taken by women enriched the photographic work, changing the styles to show the reality and making works with a big documentary quality, something that it is so difficult to find during the dictatorship. This essay wants to analyse how these women became pioneers and how their own point of view changed the photographic style in Spain after 1975. To achieve this, this essay will consider some of the most famous women photographers and their first works, putting them in their historical context, and comparing their photos with what was done during the dictatorship.

[es] El papel de las mujeres fotoperiodistas en España después de la dictadura de Franco
Resumen: Durante los últimos años de la dictadura de Franco en España (1939-1975), la fotografía se convirtió en una importante herramienta para mostrar los cambios que el país estaba atravesando. Este trabajo se centra en el rol de las primera mujeres fotoperiodistas españolas, quienes emergieron durante esos años. Además, las fotografías tomadas por mujeres enriquecieron el trabajo fotográfico, cambiando los estilos para mostrar la realidad y realizando trabajos con una mejor calidad documental, algo muy difícil de encontrar durante la dictadura. Este ensayo busca analizar cómo estas mujeres se convirtieron en pioneras y cómo su propio punto de vista cambió el estilo fotográfico en España después de 1975. Para conseguir esto, este documento considerará a algunas de las más famosas mujeres fotógrafas y sus primeros trabajos, colocándolas en su respectivo contexto histórico, y comparando sus fotografías con aquello que se realizó durante la dictadura.
